
1. Sign in with Your Government Gateway Account
Log into HMRC with your Government Gateway credentials. You will be prompted to confirm your identity and business details.
2. Check You Are Eligible
HMRC confirms that before signing up, you must:
- Be registered for Self Assessment
- Have submitted a tax return in the last 2 years
You must also meet the income threshold for your start year – April 2026/27 of £50,000+
3. HMRC states you will need
- Your Government Gateway user ID and password
- Your National Insurance number
- Your Self Assessment details
4. Enter Your Personal and Business Details
HMRC will ask you for:
- Your full Name
- Date of Birth
- National Insurance number
- Business type (e.g. sole trader / property)
- Accounting period dates
- The name of your MTD IT software - KEYPrime
HMRC uses these details to confirm eligibility before continuing.
5. Confirm Your Income Sources
For each income stream (self‑employment and/or property), you must confirm:
- The type of income
- Start dates (if new)
- Accounting method (cash or accruals)
6. Submit the Sign‑Up Request
Once all information is entered, submit your application inside the GOV.UK service.
HMRC will process it and send a confirmation email once you are officially signed up.
7. Start Using KEYPrime
You can then start submitting your quarterly updates through KEYPrime.
